About The Pittsburgh Pirates
The Pittsburgh Pirates are a Major League Baseball team based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Founded as the Alleghenys in 1882, they became the Pirates in 1887 and have been playing professional baseball ever since. The franchise has won five World Series championships (1909, 1925, 1960, 1971 and 1979) and nine National League pennants. The Pirates have also produced numerous Hall of Fame players including Roberto Clemente, Ralph Kiner, Willie Stargell and Bill Mazeroski. The team is currently owned by Bob Nutting who purchased it from Kevin McClatchy in 2007.
Under Nutting's ownership the team has experienced mixed success with only one winning season over the last decade despite making several key acquisitions to bolster their roster such as Andrew McCutchen and Gerrit Cole. The Pittsburgh Pirates became the seventh franchise to reach 10,000 all-time victories and they became the fourth to lose 10,000 games on the first day of the 2015 season.
